Turkey Trot, by Mr Paige
Thanksgiving Turkey Trot
I always look forward to receiving the Sunday Connecticut Post on the Sunday after Thanksgiving In the sports section are the results of the annual Southport Road Race, the Turkey Trot. Like many of the runners in the race, I spend time preparing for this morning by shrinking War and Peace to its smallest possible font. I then read the book carefully, getting my eyes ready for the extremely small font in which the Turkey Trot is written. I then get a large glass of carrot juice, do a few sit ups and leg stretches to get ready, put my glasses on the table, and sit down in my well-lighted grape arbor to peruse the results. I search for all the Country Day School names that are printed, and I am always on the lookout for friends of mine. This year I was able to find my high school girlfriend's grandson. I wish that they did not publish the ages--he is 19. This year I was not able to find all of the results—but I did find the numbers of all of the participants. I did make a friendly trifecta wager with a friend---I took the 144, 145, and 146 bibs—I did not win.
I do not usually recognize any of the first 100 or so runners--- they are the elite runners and that is not a crowd I run with. There were several last names in the top 100 that might be FCDS families, but I was not certain. There were more 1st names that matched up. There was a name I recognized in 23rd place---but he was not listed in that place in all the results I found—it was Alex Auer. The e will investigate. Alex, you may remember, was the star of Mr Lewis’ volleyball film. The 1st FCDS finisher that I recognized was Russell Clarida who must have found a tail wind as he sailed to 58th place. Close behind was Mr Conopask. Next was Parker Grayson-- obviously the healthy snacks from the Paige Advisor group helped him beat his father. Meg Ryan came in 115---obviously running out of Seattle and wide awake. This year they did not list the unknown runners. This was a big disappointment for me---I always imagine who it might have been. There were lots of Kreitlers in the race, the entire Seymour family competed once again with Stephan leading the way. Alums Andrew Slade and Patrick Craig finished well, Andrew was wearing a spoon costume. Mr Millard and his daughter ran, and once again they would like to give all the credit for their race to Mrs Millard and the training meals that she has been preparing.
And so it went on--- Jackie Horelik had a good finish, as did Conner Boyle and Austin Foote. Sam Runkel was the 3rd Paige advisor to finish in the top 500. Luke Laferriere led his family, and all of the Pearces finished the race. There were lots of Rosows and Keegans and Sjodins, and Patrick Scouler ran. Former teacher at FCDS Pam Ryan ran, and there were several Licameles. Mr Freer finished the race. He was right in front of Annie Hall, and this year she ran without Woody. The Laus and the Pauls were there. There were lots of Country Day people from the past---Bob Rotanz, Tristan Zeman, Sam Babington, Pierce Barry, Ryan Bohling, Devin Lupinacci, Peter Shafer, Peter Keefe, and Connor Hatten. Taylor Purdy, Tammy Dryden, Lynn Eckert, and the Fenners all ran. There were lots of Duffies but Danny math was home working on the e blotter. Dante Brittis came in before his father, Dr Brittis had a very strong finish, especially in light of the fact that he stopped and did 2 knee operations and reset 1 shoulder during his run.
Congratulations to all the members of the Country Day Extended Family who ran in this race. It was impossible for me to mention you all in this article. If I missed you this year, I will mention you next year when I might be running in the race. Supposedly, they are adding a new division that will be timed with a calendar. I had a training race against Cam Maquat, Cam Sweedler and Michael Thompson, and I won by a boot. If I mentioned you and you did not run, enjoy the glory. See you there---in November.
