Turkey Trot 2019

I always look forward to receiving the Sunday Connecticut Post on the Sunday after Thanksgiving In the sports section are the results of the annual Southport Road Race, the Turkey Trot. This year, once again I was only to get some of the results from the Post---I had to go to the internet to get the rest. Like many of the runners in the race, I spend time preparing for this morning by shrinking the reading comprehension sections of the SSAT’s to the smallest possible font. I then open them on my phone and read and answer them all carefully from across my kitchen, getting my eyes ready for the extremely small font in which the Turkey Trot is written. I play a lot of long range darts and figure out the score before I ride my bike to the target. I then get two large coffees, eat a few carrots, do a few sit ups and leg stretches to get ready, put my glasses on the table, and sit down in my well-lighted barber’s chair to peruse the results. I search for all the Country Day School names that are printed, and I am always on the lookout for friends of mine. This year I found a girl who was a field hockey player at Barlow, one former(old) girlfriend, two guys with the first name of Clifford, and three women with the last name of Paige. I always wanted one of my sons to marry a girl named Paige. There was only one guy named Fall (he did not) and there was no one named Speedy(although some people were).
I do not usually recognize any of the first 100 or so runners--- they are the elite runners and that is not a crowd with which I run. There were several last names in the top 100 that might be FCDS families, but I was not certain. There were more 1st names that matched up. But I did find Alex Rossetti in the top 100. He runs triathlons. The 108th finisher was Billy Duffy. He ran with his brothers, and Danny Duffy not only ran but figured out the average times. I was disappointed that they did not list the unnamed runners this year—I always think that maybe I was one of the. unnamed. There were lots of FCDS Kreitlers in the race, a couple of Fotovats (3 to be exact), and we had some alums like Rob Rotanz who ran with his father and sister. Coleman Clancy, Devin Lupinacci and Tristan Seman finished well.   Jackie Haberstroh ran once again—she had a different name when she taught at FCDS, The closest family competition was between Charlie and Zach Pearce who finished two places apart. The Pearces were the only family I recognized who had three generations running—Margot, Gerry and Genny. One FCDS trustee ran—congrats to Kim Meier. The Seymour family was well represented with Scott, Julie Stephen and Olivia---and Mrs Seymour helped with 4 scraped knees, 3 bloody noses, 2 ear infections and some head lice in a pear tree. .Mrs Bates’ son Sam ran, and so did Sam Runkel. There were many FCDS brother combinations---the Scoulers, the Laus, The Bachners, Michael Thomas competed, and so did Timmy Sullivan and his Mom. There were so many familiar names—like Rosow, Fenner, Tremaine, Shantz, Douglas, Paul and many more.
Congratulations to all the members of the Country Day Family who ran in this race. I counted over 80 people, but I know that I missed some lower school names. It was impossible for me to mention you all in this article. If I put your name in here and you really did not run, just enjoy the glory. If I missed you this year, I will mention you next year when I might be running in the race. Supposedly, they are adding a new division that will be timed with a calendar
